SNPRC is home to more than 2,500 nonhuman primates, including chimpanzees and a variety of monkey species. By far, the majority is baboons. With approximately 1,000 of these animals, we are home to the world’s largest colony of baboons for biomedical research.

Our animals are treated with reverence and receive great care from licensed veterinary professionals. Most of our primates are housed in large outdoor enclosures with heated and cooled indoor areas with climbing structures, perches and swings to better simulate their natural environments.

We also have an extensive environmental enrichment program, in which all of our animals participate. The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for animals housed in our facilities to express species-typical behaviors that can be found normally in primates living in the wild.

USDA Inspection Notifications:

Southwest National Primate Research Center receives regular inspections by the United States Department of Agriculture. USDA veterinary inspectors review all areas of animal care and treatment. The USDA reports comprise information on activities requiring corrective action. Notifications on the latest report findings can be found here.
