SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 20, 2023) – Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) and the Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) recently completed a routine inspection by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). USDA veterinary inspectors reviewed all areas of animal care and treatment, including an analysis of documentation. They also conducted on-site inspections of facilities and reviewed treatment of animals, as well as protocols and procedures.
USDA did not find or report any corrective action needed as part of the animal care program. The USDA did indicate a non-critical, administrative finding. A review of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols determined that one protocol that was approved for blood draws appeared to need approval for serial blood draws. These occur in the same animal at different points in time, thus requiring a separate IACUC approval. Corrective action is being implemented now to prepare and approve the new IACUC protocol and no further serial blood collections will be performed on the original protocol.
The IACUC is comprised of scientists, veterinarians, non-scientists and community members who are responsible for reviewing all activities related to the animal care program at the Institute. The committee reviews and approves all study protocols involving the use of animals in research to ensure the highest level of safety and well-being for the animals.
“The Institute closely monitors its animal welfare program and takes its role of caring for animals in biomedical research very seriously,” said Corinna Ross, PhD, Director of the Southwest National Primate Research Center. “We appreciate and value the input of the USDA and all regulatory and oversight agencies that help us ensure we maintain excellent care of the animals that enable this critical research to continue.”
